The highest point on the
Langeberg Mountains measures approximately 1500m
high. All our trails climb from about 250m above sea
level to at least 700m. The highest peak on
Tafelberg (our own Table Mountain) is 741m above sea
level. All the trails below are for the young at
heart.
All hike durations are averages and only indicate
the hiking time ONE WAY (NOT RETURN). DON’T LEAVE
THE RETURN HIKE FOR TOO LATE AS YOU DON’T WANT TO BE
STUCK IN THE MOUNTAINS AFTER DARK. By 3pm you should
turn around and head down the mountain a.s.a.p.
KARIN TRAIL
Named after Karin Busch, this trail is both
beautiful and rewarding and it is one of our
most popular trails. It follows the mountain
streams along shaded & wooded valleys. Tree
ferns, rocks and the gurgling stream are
your companions. We recommend this
delightfully cool hike during the summer
months.
It starts on Berg-en-Dal behind the
big dam, follow the road and take the left
fork up the valley, this is Karin Trail and
it takes you to behind Tafelberg. Here you
have the option of climbing out of the
valley and up the mountain to join one of
the other trails or you can turn around. We
recommend zig-zagging up the side of the
mountain, following the firebreak and going
down Teebos Trail on Bergplaas.
This trail is quite rocky and steep at
places, it can be slippery and some
scrambling over boulders and under trees is
required once you enter the river. It should
take 2-3 hours from start to end. Add
another 2 hours if you are coming down
Teebos Trail. DON’T FORGET TO ADD ON THE
RETURN HIKES DURATION. |

TEEBOS TRAIL
This trail is named after the Teebos plant found
along the stream. It starts at the back of our farm
Bergplaas. Park at the main farmhouse and follow the
road to the forest lodge in the Poplar forest. To
the right of the house you will find the start of
Teebos Trail. It wanders through the Poplars, out
along the stream, past Stonehenge and finally to the
very foot of the Langeberg along the firebreak. Here
you have the option of following the firebreak and
joining up with one of the other trails (we
recommend going behind Tafelberg and coming down
Karin Trail on Berg-en-Dal, or you can turn around.
This trail is a nice walk along the fynbos covered
banks of a stream and is quite easy. In summer it
may become quite hot near the end as you climb out
of the valley. It should take 2-3 hours from start
to end. Add another 2 hours if you are coming
down Karin Trail. DON’T FORGET TO ADD ON THE
RETURN HIKES DURATION.

MIMI TRAIL
Named after a dear departed friend and hiker, Mimi
de Villiers. This trail starts in the mountains
behind Tafelberg (at the very top of Karin Trail)
and zigzags up the Langeberg. On top you will come
to a rocky area with a stream and rock pools. Please
be careful while swimming and you will not be
disappointed by the spectacular views.
This trail is one-way so you must
return the way you came, this portion of your hike
will add another 2 hours (there and back) onto your
adventure.

MIDDELRUG
Middelrug starts at the swimming dam on Berg-en-Dal
farm. Climb up onto the dam wall and walk along its
length to the far left-hand side. Once in the far
left corner on top of the dam wall, turn left (away
from the dam) and walk along the side of the
mountain. Look for the start of the trail a few
meters on, it turns sharply to the right and goes up
the side of the mountain. This trail goes up along
the ridge of the spur and promises spectacular views
and sunshine.
This trail should take 2 hours
and you must return along the same route. It is
quite steep but not difficult to walk. Take plenty
of water in summer as you do not cross any rivers.
If you know your fynbos you may be able to find an
endangered Erika variety which is only found on our
farm. Thought to have become extinct, several years
ago a veldfire (started by lightning) ravaged this
spur and subsequently resurrected this particular
Erika species.
4x4 TRAIL
Traditionally reserved for off-road vehicles, this
trail is highly recommended for the hiker. This is a
circular route which is clear and easy to follow
with plenty of proteas and fynbos along the way. The
views are absolutely magnificent as Spitzkopf is the
highest hill in the area. You will have a perfect
vantage point to admire the Langeberg and on clear
days you will be able to see beyond Robertson,
McGregor and Bonnievale. This trail starts a few
hundred meters before our farm Bergplaas on the
left, just next to the loading ramp. Follow the road
to the top of the mountain, all the way round and
back down the valley behind the main house.
This trail is reasonably steep
with loose gravel, however it shouldn’t be too
difficult. It will probably take 2-3 hours non-stop.
Don’t forget your camera (and film), take plenty of
water and good comfortable shoes.
HERMIT TRAIL
So named after the legend of an old hermit who used
to live in the Langeberg mountains. Apparently he
horded a fortune in Kruger Rands and the secret of
this treasure was lost when he died. Over the
decades the exact position of his mountain home was
lost, along with his treasure. In the 1980’s when we
cleared the dense vegetation to make our hiking
trails we found several exotic lemon trees in the
middle of the fynbos forest at the foot of Hermits
Trail. Apparently no human had been there in
decades! We can only assume that this was the source
of the Hermits vitamin C.
Hermit Trail starts along Karin
Trail and then branches off steeply towards the left
up the side of the mountain. It is very steep and
zigzags up the mountain to come out on the side of
Tafelberg. Here you have the option of joining any
of the other trails, or you can turn around. The
trail from bottom to top should take about 1 hour.
DON’T FORGET TO ADD ON THE RETURN HIKES DURATION.
KANFERKLOOF TRAIL
Starting at House Assegai, cross the two fields
behind the house along the road, cross the river on
the left back corner by the willow tree. Now follow
the road on the mountain side of the river back down
the valley. When you get to the wire gate turn sharp
left and go up the side of the mountain, over the
hill and down into the next hidden valley. This is
an adventure trail we call Kanferkloof after the
vegetation which grows in this valley. It may be
quite dense and overgrown as this valley is very
secluded and hidden.
The trail follows the stream
under tall trees and over boulders with some rock
pools and areas where scrambling and climbing is
required – this is afterall an adventure trail. This
trail should take 1-2 hours and can either join up
with Assegai or Bawa Trail which makes it longer.
Please remember
| • |
Always wear
comfortable hiking shoes and warm
clothes in winter. (We don’t recommend
new shoes which have not been worn in
yet!) It is advisable to take a
windbreaker or other wind / waterproof
clothing with ‘just in case’. |
| • |
Try and avoid
hiking alone and always tell someone
(either one of the Busch family or
friends staying behind) which trail you
intend taking. |
| • |
During wet
weather please be especially careful,
trails and slopes can be very slippery
especially along the rivers and on the
steeper shaded slopes. Rocks are
slippery. |
| • |
Please do not
pick any flowers, damage any plants or
change the natural environment in any
way. Please take nothing but photos and
leave nothing but footprints. |
